The Origin Story of DeepSeek AI
DeepSeek AI was born out of a mission to create a more intuitive, adaptive, and human-centric AI system. Founded by a team of visionary engineers and data scientists, DeepSeek was designed to bridge the gap between raw computational power and real-world usability. Unlike traditional AI models that rely heavily on pre-existing data, DeepSeek leverages a proprietary algorithm that learns and evolves in real-time, making it uniquely suited for dynamic, fast-paced industries.
Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek creates large language models (LLMs) that are open-source. The Chinese hedge fund High-Flyer, whose co-founder Liang Wenfeng founded the business in 2023 and acts as its CEO, owns and finances the Hangzhou, Zhejiang-based corporation.
Responses from the DeepSeek-R1 model are on par with those from other modern LLMs, like OpenAI's GPT-4o and o1. It uses a tenth of the processing power of an equivalent LLM and is trained at a substantially lower cost—said to be US$6 million, as opposed to $100 million for OpenAI's GPT-4 in 2023. DeepSeek's artificial intelligence models were created amid US sanctions on China and India over Nvidia processors, which were meant to limit the nation's capacity to create sophisticated AI systems.
Based on the DeepSeek-R1 model, DeepSeek released its first free chatbot app for iOS and Android on January 10, 2025. By January 27, DeepSeek-R1 had overtaken ChatGPT as the most downloaded free software in the US on the iOS App Store, which resulted in an 18% decline in Nvidia's share price. The triumph of DeepSeek over larger and more established rivals has been described as "the opening shot at what is developing as a global AI space race," "upending AI," and the start of "a new era of A.I. brinkmanship."
